Atomic Heart is a much anticipated game with the current release date in February 21, 2023. Atomic Heart is a game that takes place in the Soviet Union in an alternate 1955. Advances in robotics in the 1930’s enabled the USSR to defeat Nazi Germany in 1941, though with a much more severe loss of life. This results in the automation of much of Soviet labor and the development of a proto-Internet called the “Collectiv 1.0” linking these robots, vastly increasing productivity and scientific advancement by the end of the 1940s.
Concurrently, scientist Dmitry Sechenov develops the “neuro-polymer”, a programmable module based on living tissue. A believer in a collective consciousness, Sechenov plans to launch the most advanced iteration of the “Collectiv 2.0” on his 55th birthday in 1955. This Collectiv 2.0 allows the user to enchance its mental capabilities and brain-activity, causing in huge amounts of information to be absorbed in very little time, and more.
The main protagonist is a mentally unstable KGB special agent called Major Nechaev, nicknamed P-3, who is sent by his contractor Sechenov to keep the situation at facility 3826 from deteriorating. P3 is challenged with taking out robots that went haywire, failed biomechanical experiments, and his own mental health.
The gameplay, story and aesthetics remind us of games like BioShock. From the undertones of horror and use of powers alongside traditional gunplay. One could even describe Atomic Heart as Soviet BioShock. With that in mind, we thought to bring up a hidden gem of a game that can also be described as Soviet BioShock before Atomic Heart. That game is Singularity which is more a mix of Soviet BioShock and Call of Duty. But instead of typical powers, you get time manipulation powers and a time travel story, sort of. In fact, it’s one of the last few unique game titles produced by Raven Software before they moved their focus onto the Call of Duty franchise.
Singularity is a science fiction first-person shooter video game developed by Raven Software and published by Activision in 2010. The game is set in the year 2010 on a secret research facility on a remote island called Katorga-12, which was used by the Soviet Union during the Cold War to conduct experiments with a fictional element called “E99”. The player takes on the role of a soldier named Nathaniel Renko who is sent to the island to investigate the facility after communication with it is lost.
The game’s story revolves around time travel and the consequences of tampering with the past. The player must navigate through the island, fighting off mutated creatures and hostile soldiers as they uncover the truth about what happened on Katorga-12. Along the way, the player will discover the ability to manipulate time and use it to their advantage in combat.
One of the standout features of Singularity is its use of the “TMD” (Time Manipulation Device), which allows the player to manipulate time in various ways. The TMD can be used to slow down time, reverse time, and even age objects and enemies. This adds a unique element to the gameplay, as the player must strategically use the TMD in order to overcome challenges and defeat enemies.
The game’s graphics and visuals are impressive, with detailed environments and character models for the time. The island of Katorga-12 is a desolate and eerie place, with crumbling buildings and abandoned equipment scattered throughout the landscape. The mutated creatures that the player encounters are also well-designed, with a variety of different species that all have their own unique abilities and behaviors.
Overall, Singularity is a solid first-person shooter with unique gameplay mechanics and an intriguing story. The ability to manipulate time adds a fresh twist to the genre, and the game’s visuals and atmosphere are impressive.
