Morocco will meet Croatia in the World Cup third-place playoff on Saturday.

While Qatar 2022 has been full of surprises, the two outsiders were beaten in their respective semi-finals but can still end what has been a famous tournament on a high.

The Atlas Lions are already the first African team to make it to the final four but could celebrate the more tangible achievement of finishing third with a win, while Croatia are looking to replicate their success in 1998.

While 2018’s finalists haven’t quite made it again, to secure a second third-placed finish would be another remarkable achievement.

It’s not easy to separate two teams who defeated so-called bigger opposition en route to the last-four. Morocco knocked out both Portugal and Spain before France proved to be a step too far. Croatia, meanwhile, defeated pre-tournament favourites Brazil on penalties.

Morocco and Croatia have already met in the 2022 World Cup too. Fittingly, the game ended 0-0; two sides renowned for their resolute defending playing out a goalless draw on matchday one. Which in a way should make the third place playoff an interesting match for third place.

Morocco lost all of Romain Saiss, Nayef Aguerd and Noussair Mazraoui during the semi-final defeat to France and it would be a surprise to see any of them feature.

Croatia, meanwhile, have largely stayed injury free throughout their time in Qatar.

After the disappointment of not reaching the final, teams can suffer something of a hangover. If any team has the experience to deal with that, it is surely Croatia. With Croatia having slightly better odds to win in the upcoming match

Should Morocco beat Croatia this weekend, they will at least become the first African team in World Cup history ever to land a podium finish. Not the prize they were dreaming of, of course, but a nice consolation nonetheless.
