Newcastle United’s ‘progress is expected in the coming days’ over their proposed move for Federico Chiesa, with the Magpies ‘ready to offer’ €50m for the Juventus star.
Having qualified for the Champions League, Eddie Howe is readying his squad to battle on multiple fronts and wants to add experience and quality to his ranks.
Sandro Tonali has already arrived from AC Milan for £60m and they’re thought to be close to agreeing a deal worth around £25m with Leicester for winger Harvey Barnes.
But Totto Juve (via Sport Witness) claim Newcastle are still keen on Chiesa, who first emerged as a possible transfer target last month.
They had ‘made contact’ over Chiesa and fellow Serie A star Theo Hernandez.
Talks over a move for Chiesa are ongoing with ‘progress expected’ in the negotiation between Newcastle and Juventus in the ‘coming days’.
The Italy international has two years left on his current deal and it’s claimed the Magpies are ‘ready to offer’ €50m to land him, though previous reports have claimed Juventus will want €60m.
Chiesa joined Juventus for around €60m in the summer of 2022 after an initial loan spell with the Old Lady, and was the subject of £100m interest following his starring role for Italy at Euro 2020.
The 25-year-old is open to an exit this summer and that’s in no small part due to manager Massimiliano Allegri, with whom he ‘does not have a great feeling’, chiefly because of his tactics at Juventus.
There is no obvious place for Chiesa, who likes to operate on the wing, in Allegri’s preferred 3-5-2 formation, with the only suitable roles for him in that system as a second striker or wing-back.
There’s also doubt over his future due to talks over a contract renewal coming to a ‘standstill’.
The report claims it’s ‘not a priority’ for Juventus, and with his contract expiring in 2025 the Serie A giants are wary of the risk of losing him for nothing, and may look to cash in now while his stock is still high.
That’s good news for Newcastle, though they may be troubled by reports suggesting Chiesa has been ‘charmed’ by the prospect of joining Liverpool.
