Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have taken a record away from Sir Alex Ferguson’s all-conquering Manchester United after Harvey Elliott sent the Reds to the top of the Premier League on Saturday with a late winner at Crystal Palace.
Elliott came off the bench to score the decisive goal in the 91st minute as Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 at Selhurst Park.
His strike was the 17th stoppage time winner Liverpool have scored since Jurgen Klopp arrived at the club in 2015, taking them one clear of the 16 United managed under Ferguson in the Premier League era.
United’s ability to pull results out the bag with late goals led to stoppage time in their games being labelled ‘Fergie Time’.
But Liverpool have become the kings of injury time over the last eight years, with Klopp’s men refusing to give in until the final whistle.
During their 31 years in the Premier League, Liverpool have netted 43 winners in the 90th minute or later – 11 more than closest challengers, Arsenal – and 40 per cent of those goals have come since Klopp took charge.
Leaving it late has become Liverpool’s trademark, and they have had players pop up from all over the pitch to turn the game in their favour at the death.
Some of their more memorable late goals have come at the Kop end, with Divock Origi capitalising on a Jordan Pickford error to win the Merseyside derby for his side back in 2018, leading to Jurgen Klopp running on the pitch to celebrate with Alisson.
Liverpool also benefitted from a Toby Alderweireld own goal in the same season to edge past Tottenham.
Arguably their most famous late strike came from Alisson, when got on the end of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner to secure a 2-1 win at West Brom in May 2021.
His header proved vital in Liverpool’s charge to finish in the top four after a disappointing campaign.
Sadio Mane scored three stoppage time winners under Klopp, while Origi netted two.
Surprisingly, Mohamed Salah, who scored his 200th Liverpool goal on Saturday, has not scored a winning goal in the 90th minute or later for the club.
Liverpool have already scored two stoppage time winners this season, with Darwin Nunez completing a remarkable comeback for the Merseyside outfit with a 93rd-minute goal in a 2-1 win at Newcastle in August, before Elliott produced his own moment of magic this weekend.
Luis Diaz also earned Liverpool a late point when they looked destined for defeat at Luton last month.
Klopp’s team moved one point clear at the summit this weekend as they leapfrogged Arsenal after the Gunners were beaten 1-0 by Aston Villa.
They will get the chance to keep hold of top spot on Sunday when they host fierce rivals United at Old Trafford.
The Reds will hope a late winner isn’t necessary, as they prepare to face a struggling United side that slipped to a humiliating 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth on Saturday.
