Manchester United will have to choose between signing a top goalkeeper or striker this summer due to their current budget.
The Red Devils are unable to fork out for both a top level striker as well as a top keeper, particularly as they look to commit £50million plus to a deal for Chelsea’s Mason Mount.
Manchester United had been priced out of a move for Tottenham striker Harry Kane, despite the England captain being Erik ten Hag’s top target.
The huge £100million fee being demanded by Tottenham for a player who will turn 30 next month and only has one year left on his contract – combined with the complications of negotiating with Spurs chief Daniel Levy – saw United view the deal as a non-starter for now.
And with securing Mount now deemed a priority, United will have to reassess their options in other areas of the pitch.
United have shown interest in Everton’s Jordan Pickford but are yet to make an enquiry.
Ten Hag likes Inter Milan’s Andre Onana as a keeper who could play out from the back to better effect than David de Gea but he would cost in the region of £45m.
One possibility is that Inter do like some of United’s fringe players and a player exchange could reduce the fee.
Meanwhile, United want £2million for defender Eric Bailly amid interest from Real Betis.
The 29-year-old, who cost United £30m from Villarreal in 2016, had a poor campaign on loan at Marseille last season and has been hindered by niggling injuries.
